Anthony Martial has praised the forming partnership of Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in Manchester United’s midfielder, after the forward netted his first ever hat-trick against Sheffield United.
Martial was in fine form as he scored all of United’s goals in a 3-0 win over Sheffield United in the Premier League on Wednesday evening at Old Trafford.
It was the first Premier League hat-trick from a Manchester United player since 2013 and it vastly improved the side’s chances of a Champions League place for next season.
The Frenchman’s link-up with Marcus Rashford was impressive, with the Englishman laying on two of his goals, and Martial trying to return the favour but Rashford missed an open goal before the break.
However, it was the new combination of Pogba and Fernandes in the middle of the park that was exciting many United fans, as the two superstars started a game together for the first time.
Martial was pleased to see them teaming up when it matters after a lot of work in training.
‘They’re both good players,’ Martial told Manchester United’s official website. ‘In training, we practise a lot to link up so, today, was a very good game.
‘We created a lot of chances, so I’m happy.’
The Fernandes-Pogba connection showed signs of promise against the Blades, but United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was not getting over excited.
‘Paul is still a bit away from his best form which is natural because that’s his first start since September and he’s been working hard, so hopefully there is more to come,’ said Solskjaer after the game.
‘I thought Bruno showed some quality in the game and it’s exciting to be working with talent like this.’
Martial took his tally to 19 goals for the season, which is exactly the same amount Rashford has managed, but he insists there is no competition between the forwards.
‘He gave me one or two assists today, so the most important [thing] is to win,’ he said. ‘I tried to give him a chance to score – no competition, we just want to win.’
The Red Devils are back in action in the FA Cup quarter-finals against Norwich on Saturday evening.
