Can pubs show football and live sports when they reopen?

As long as they are ‘Covid-secure’, pubs are among the hospitality businesses allowed to reopen soon.

The Prime Minister announced last week that much-missed pubs would be able to open their doors from July 4, saying: ‘All hospitality indoors will be limited to table-service, and our guidance will encourage minimal staff and customer contact.’

While many welcome the return of their local boozers, they won’t be opening exactly as they were before the pandemic and some have been left wondering what will and won’t be allowed under social distancing rules…

Technically yes, pubs can show live sports when they open their doors again.

However, people in pubs will have to be socially distanced and the Government has asked that venues not play ‘music or broadcasts that may encourage shouting.’

This is because it’s thought that it could increase the transmission of Covid-19.

The Government’s website states: ‘All venues should ensure that steps are taken to avoid people needing to unduly raise their voices to each other.

‘This includes, but is not limited to, refraining from playing music or broadcasts that may encourage shouting, including if played at a volume that makes normal conversation difficult.

‘This is because of the potential for increased risk of transmission, particularly from aerosol transmission. We will develop further guidance, based on scientific evidence, to enable these activities as soon as possible.

‘You should take similar steps to prevent other close contact activities, such as communal dancing.’

Therefore you might find that your local won’t want to risk showing the next big game for fear of provoking excess noise among patrons.
