A minor anti-Black Lives Matter protest was held outside Stamford Bridge in which a handful of Chelsea fans called on the club to stop players ‘taking a knee’ before Premier League matches.
All players, backroom staff and match officials have kneeled down before kick-off since the resumption of the Premier League last Wednesday in recognition of the Black Lives Matter movement.
The death of George Floyd in police custody in May sparked protests across America, initially because of the police brutality that many African-Americans face in the United States.
However, protests extended across the world to shine a light on the systemic racism faced by black people and the Premier League has taken a strong stand by dropping their stance on ‘political’ messages during matches and by including a Black Lives Matter message on players’ shirts.
Though widely backed, the movement has taken criticism in some quarters and a ‘White Lives Matter’ message was flown over the Etihad Stadium during Manchester City’s clash against Burnley.
Anti-Black Lives Matter protests were held in London earlier this month and a small number of Chelsea fans led their own protest outside Stamford Bridge earlier this week.
One fan, who appeared to be leading the protest, sung: ‘Roman Abramovich, we won’t take a knee’.
The same fan opened the protest with a ‘message’ for the club’s owner, claiming the Black Lives Matter movement is ‘racist’.
‘We’re here today to send a message to Roman Abramovich,’ the Chelsea fan said.
‘Roman Abramovich, we won’t take the knee. We don’t want our players to take the knee.
‘You came here from Russia, you broke away from communism. The previous government wouldn’t let you build an extension to this club.
‘The government we have in now they’re fighting for Brexit, we want Brexit and we want you to show us you’re not part of the globalist oligarchy.
‘Black Lives Matter is a racist organisation that is Marxist and is here to take our statues down and take everything down that we love in this country.
‘We believe all lives matter. so the message is to Roman Abramovich is do not let our players or do not force our players to take the knee.
‘We don’t want our players to be forced to take the knee. Black Lives Matter is racist, all lives matter! Football has been taken over by globalism.’Follow us:
