Joe Cole believes Ben Chilwell ‘fits the ethos’ that Chelsea are looking to recruit this summer and says the chance to work with Frank Lampard would be ‘immense’ for the left-back.
The Blues have set their sights on signing Chilwelll after wrapping up deals for Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech and Leipzig striker Timo Werner but Leicester are playing hardball and have slapped a £75million price tag on the England international.
However, Chelsea are confident the draw of Champions League football – should they qualify – would be enough to lure Chilwell to Stamford Bridge should they meet Leicester’s hefty asking price.
The full-back further enhanced his reputation at the weekend with a stunning long-range strike in the Foxes’ 1-1 draw with Watford at Vicarage Road.
‘Similar to Werner, he fits the ethos – he is young, he’s hungry, he’s explosive and athletic,’ former Chelsea winger turned BT Sport pundit Cole said.
‘I think he’s got a lot of talent, if he comes to Chelsea, working with the group there – in Brendan [Rodgers] he’s got a great manager and a great team up at Leicester. But Chelsea’s a step up from Leicester.
‘I know they are sitting above Chelsea in the table at the moment but having the opportunity to work with Frank and improve would be immense for him.
‘He’s got the left-back position for England in his hands at the moment.
‘My advice would be to keep performing, keep consistent and if he does do that he can be England’s left-back and, if he does come to Chelsea, Chelsea’s left-back for many years. He’s a terrific player, a real talent.’
Leicester head coach Brendan Rodgers insisted he was ‘pretty relaxed’ about Chilwell’s future when asked about the recent speculation ahead of the side’s trip to Watford.
He said: ‘There’s no need to comment on it. He’s come back, he looks fantastic.
‘He’s come back refreshed and in everything he’s done he’s looked exceptional.
‘We’re relaxed on it. It’s a sequence the club is used to now, and when you have a talented group of players they’re going to make the headlines.
‘But I’m pretty relaxed on it.’
