Gary Neville has issued a word of warning to Manchester United and says his former club still ‘three or four’ quality signings to challenge for the Premier League title.

January addition Bruno Fernandes scored a brace to help the Red Devils secure an emphatic 3-0 victory over Brighton on Tuesday, with teenage forward Mason Greenwood producing the other goal.

The impressive win sees Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side climb to fifth in the Premier League – two points behind Chelsea, who have a game in hand.

Neville was impressed by Manchester United’s performance on the south coast but, speaking before the game, said Solskjaer still needed to be backed further during this summer’s transfer window.

He told Sky Sports: ‘This team is a lot more likeable than the one which was here two years ago when you thought United’s recruitment had lost direction.

‘But l would urge some caution. Manchester United are sixth in the Premier League. They have a squad which is improving with young players.

‘But there is still some work to be done in the transfer market to get this team to a title-winning team – which has to be Manchester United’s ambition.

‘There is more needed and a lot more needed. Three or four players of high quality of the Bruno Fernandes type to get them to the point where they can challenge.’

Asked whether Neville was right and that Manchester United still need more reinforcements, former England star Jamie Redknapp added: ‘Possibly.

‘But if you look at this squad and the bench, with Daniel James and Scott McTominay and Fred there. There is depth but this is Manchester United you’re talking about.

‘Every time they won a title a new player would come in and they’d try to improve. They still need to improve.’

Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for England and Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho ahead of the summer.

Solskjaer’s side return to action on Saturday with a home match against Bournemouth.
