Bruce Grobbelaar has suggested that Kylian Mbappe would not walk straight into Liverpool’s starting XI amid speculation linking the Paris Saint-Germain striker with a move to Anfield.
Mbappe would represent a big coup for the club and they have reportedly considered using Sadio Maneas part of a deal to sign the 21-year-old this summer.
After the Ligue 1 season was cancelled in April due to the coronavirus crisis, the Frenchman picked up the golden boot award for a second consecutive season, further establishing himself as one of Europe’s most revered forwards.
However, even if Mbappe was to complete a surprise switch to Anfield, Reds legend Grobbelaar has questioned whether he would start ahead of star trio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.
‘Well, if he comes to Anfield he’s going to have to prove his worth up front for sure. And that’s only if and when he comes,’ Grobbelaar told Stats Perform News.
‘We do not know what the circumstances is. It will be up to [Jurgen] Klopp and FSG [Fenway Sports Group] who will reveal something probably in the new season.
‘But whoever comes to Anfield, as you see with [Takumi] Minamino, he’s going to have to improve a hell of a lot more to get into the side.’
Liverpool look set to trim down their squad this summer, which could include letting the likes of Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Xherdan Shaqiri leave in search of more game time.
‘The squad is brilliant at this stage, it’s up to FSG and the Klopp advisers that are going to determine whether those players go or remain,’ Grobbelaar added.
‘I, for one, think they will be going because they want first-team football.
‘Listen, at this moment in time every player wants to come and play for Liverpool because we’re the Premiership title holders and anybody who doesn’t must go to see the doctor very quickly, because we are the best team and we will be the best team for so many years.’
